Almost my entire life, I've lived in Montana. But I have also had numerous opportunities to travel and see the world. I am grateful to have visited Australia and France, and to have been able to see cultures outside the US. I've made many trips to Canada and driven all over the country. Still, Montana is home, and as many times as I leave, I've always returned.
I graduated with honors from Montana State University Billings in a Bachelor of Arts, but that is only one step on my journey. I look forward to continuing to grow and learn as a part of the worldwide art community.
Artist Statement
How I understand the world:
Never stop at first impression. Ask questions. Investigate the why.
Everything holds a memory in its skin.
Sometimes you have to destroy a thing to complete it.
A label, or a definition, binds faster than chains.
There's paradoxes in every moral system.
Words have tastes and numbers have colors.
There's peace to be found, even in pain.
I am a complex web of traits and roles, some of which conflict.
Media
I've wanted to be an artist ever since my grandfather introduced me to oil painting as a child. He painted for himself and for his family, using bright colors to create impressions of his favorite locations. After that early start, I explored every kind of media I could get my hands on. I used acrylic and watercolor, pencil and pen. I tried many kinds of sculpture, eventually finding a favorite kind of clay, though I also enjoy woodworking and fabric forms. I delved into the digital world, discovering both digital painting and sculpture. Most recently I moved back into traditional media, trying my hand at watercolor and India ink, the latter of which became my favorite 2D material.
Part of the reason I've tried my hand at so many techniques is because I love to learn, I love challenges, and I love expanding my skill set. Every art form is, at its core, the same, so what I learn in one discipline I can apply to all the others.
